In June 2025, Johnson Health Tech recalled roughly 3.8 million Bowflex 552 and 1090 dumbbells after the plates could dislodge from the handle during use. It adjusts in coarser 2.3 kg steps with a two-dial system that is slower to change. A capable set on paper, but the recall makes it hard to recommend over a verified alternative. PowerBlock Pro EXP
PowerBlock's block design is the most compact way to store this much weight, and the pin selector is fast and durable. The catch is the shape and the expansion path: a square block does not handle like a round dumbbell, and reaching the top weight means buying add-on kits that push the real cost up.
