Every adjustable dumbbell looks solid in a product photo. The differences show up in month eight, when the finish has worn through where the plates meet the cradle, or a shell has hairline-cracked around a fixing point. Here is what causes that, and what to check before you spend.

Why Adjustable Dumbbells Chip and Crack

Three failure modes cover almost everything.

Coating wear at contact points. The plate faces and edges touch the cradle every time you rack the dumbbell. If the coating is thin or poorly bonded, that repeated contact wears it through, and once bare metal is exposed it corrodes. This is normal wear rather than a defect, but a better coating delays it by years.

Impact chipping. Drop a coated plate onto a hard floor and the coating can chip at the point of impact. Thicker rubberised or polymer coatings absorb more of that energy. Thin painted finishes chip most easily.

Cracking in structural plastic. This is the serious one. Where a plastic shell or housing carries actual load rather than just covering metal, repeated stress can propagate a crack from a fixing point or moulding seam. A dumbbell whose structure is metal and whose plastic is cosmetic does not have this failure mode.

Read the Warranty Before You Read the Marketing

Warranty exclusions tell you what the manufacturer expects to break, and they are more honest than any product page.

NÜOBELL sells a well-built dumbbell, and its published warranty terms exclude damage from dropping or slamming. That is a reasonable term, but it tells you the product is not designed to be dropped, which is worth knowing if you train to failure with heavy presses.

The more serious example is Bowflex. In 2025 the SelectTech 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells were recalled in the United States because weight plates could dislodge from the handle during use. The recall covered roughly 3.8 million units sold between 2004 and May 2025, and Nautilus reported 337 incidents including 111 injuries such as concussions, broken toes and contusions. That is a locking-integrity failure rather than a coating one, and it is the reason we treat the mechanism as part of build quality rather than a separate topic.

If a listing will not tell you the coating type, assume it is paint. If the warranty excludes dropping, plan to set the dumbbell down deliberately rather than releasing it from lockout.

Making Any Set Last

Rack the dumbbell into its cradle rather than dropping it. Put a mat down if you train on tile or concrete, which protects both the floor and the coating. Wipe sweat off after sessions, because salt attacks any exposed metal at a worn edge. And do not store them somewhere damp, like an unheated garage in winter, where condensation forms on cold metal.
