The Best Adjustable Dumbbells for Drop Sets and Supersets: Weight-Change Speed Compared

A drop set only works if the weight change is faster than your muscles recover. That makes the selector mechanism, not the top weight, the spec that matters. We timed dial, twist, pin and two-dial systems between sets. The BrainGain SmartBells 40 kg wins for drop sets: one hand, one dial, about a second, 17 settings from 5 to 40 kg for €449.

Marc Devlin ran BrainGain's 90-day stress test of the SmartBells against the NÜOBELL and Bowflex 552. He times, drops and counts things so you do not have to.

Here is the problem with most "best adjustable dumbbell" lists: they rank on top weight and price and never mention the one number that decides whether a drop set is possible. A drop set is a set taken to failure, then immediately continued at a lower weight, then again. The word that matters is immediately. If changing weight takes fifteen seconds and two hands, the muscle recovers, the set breaks, and you are doing three normal sets with a pause. Supersets have the same problem in a milder form.

So this guide ranks on weight-change time first. We used the stopwatch method from our 90-day stress test, then added the two mechanisms that test did not cover, pin and screw-lock, from hands-on use. Top weight, increments and price come second, because they decide which dumbbell you buy once you know it can drop.

The short version

  • Winner: BrainGain SmartBells 40 kg, €449. One-hand dial, about one second per change, 17 settings from 5 to 40 kg, €5.61 per kilogram.
  • Fastest premium option: SmartBells Pro 32.5 kg, from €579. One-hand twist in 1.5 kg steps, which is the finer drop a pressing movement needs.
  • Avoid for drop sets: two-dial systems (Bowflex 552 and 1090i), where both hands leave the handle, and screw-lock systems, where each change is a minor assembly job.
  • Pin systems (PowerBlock) sit in the middle: fast once learned, but you need to look at what you are doing.

Why the selector decides the workout

A working muscle starts recovering the moment tension stops. The research on rest intervals is consistent that meaningful recovery begins inside the first ten to twenty seconds. A drop set is designed to deny that recovery. So the mechanism's job is to get you from 20 kg back under tension at 15 kg before that window closes, and to do it without you having to look down, set the dumbbell on a rack or use both hands.

That means three things matter more than usual. Can you change weight with one hand while the other holds the second dumbbell? Can you do it by feel? And does the mechanism lock positively, so a rushed change does not leave a plate loose? The last one is the safety point, and it is why we tested drop behaviour and lateral play in the same 90-day series. A loose plate at the bottom of a drop set is the failure the June 2025 Bowflex 552 recall was about.

The table hides one nuance worth saying plainly. The 40 kg SmartBells dial is faster than the Pro twist because it is a coarser instrument: push down, turn to the number, lift. The Pro twist is slower because it is stepping through 1.5 kg increments across a longer range. For a pure drop set on rows or goblet squats, faster wins and the 40 kg is the pick. For pressing, where you want to drop 1.5 kg rather than 2.5 kg, the Pro's finer steps are worth the extra three seconds. Both are one-hand changes, which is what rules the other three out.

Ranked for drop sets and supersets

1. BrainGain SmartBells 40 kg: best for drop sets

€449 · 5 to 40 kg · 17 settings · one-hand dial · 36-month warranty

The fastest weight change we have measured on any adjustable dumbbell, and the reason is that there is nothing to think about. The dial has a detent at every setting, so you can drop from 30 to 25 to 20 kg by feel while your other hand keeps hold of the second bell. In the 90-day series the dial system showed minimal plate play under load and no plate movement in a 30 cm loaded drop, which matters when you are rushing changes at the end of a set. One survey respondent described it as a "slick change of weight, not interlocking when replacing in rack", which is the whole review in a sentence. At €5.61 per kilogram it is also the cheapest set per kilo in Europe, so you are not paying extra for the speed.

2. BrainGain SmartBells Pro 32.5 kg: best for pressing drop sets

From €579 · 4 to 32.5 kg · 1.5 kg steps · one-hand twist · 36-month warranty

Slower than the 40 kg dial at about four seconds, but the drop is finer. On a shoulder press or a lateral raise a 2.5 kg drop is often too big, and a 1.5 kg step lets you run a four-drop set without the last one turning into a warm-up weight. The 34 mm knurled Gen 4 handle also helps when your grip is the thing failing. If you press more than you row, this is the one. 3. NÜOBELL 32 kg: fast twist, higher price

~€769 · 2 to 32 kg · 2 kg steps · 2-year warranty

The NÜOBELL twist is fast and one-handed and it is a good drop-set dumbbell. It costs €190 more than the SmartBells Pro 32.5 for the same ceiling, steps in 2 kg rather than 1.5, and developed slight play by the end of our 90 days. Buy it for the badge if the badge matters to you.

4. PowerBlock: precise but not a drop-set tool

£364.99 to £1,079 · pin selector · 1.1 kg adder weights

The pin is quick once you have the muscle memory, and the adder weights give the smallest drop on this list. But every change needs both hands and a look at the block, which is exactly what a drop set cannot afford. Fine for straight sets and supersets with a rest between exercises, wrong tool for drops. Full comparison in SmartBells Pro vs PowerBlock.

5. Bowflex SelectTech 552 and 1090i: two dials, two hands

~€429 and ~€549 · two-dial selector

Both dials have to move for most changes, so the bell goes back in its tray and both hands leave the handle. In the 90-day test it was the slowest to change and showed the most play. Add the 2025 recall on the 552 and it is the one to skip for this use.

A drop-set session that only works on a one-hand dial

Three movements, three drops each, one pair of SmartBells 40 kg. Rest 90 seconds between movements, none inside them. Start at a weight you can do for 8 clean reps.

  1. Goblet squat. 8 reps at your working weight, drop 5 kg, reps to failure, drop 5 kg, reps to failure. Dial changes: two, one hand, without putting the bell down.
  2. Single-arm row. 8 reps each side, drop 5 kg, failure, drop 5 kg, failure. Your free hand holds the bench, the dial hand changes the weight.
  3. Seated shoulder press. 8 reps, drop 2.5 kg, failure, drop 2.5 kg, failure. This is where the Pro's 1.5 kg steps would be kinder; on the 40 kg, use the 2.5 kg step and accept a shorter last drop.

Total time inside each movement should be under three minutes. If it is longer, the weight changes are eating the set. For a full week built around one adjustable pair, see building muscle at home.

Speed only matters because of drop sets. Then it is the only thing that matters.

What owners told us

We surveyed 73 BrainGain owners across the EU about how they train. Most train three or more times a week, and 70% do it in limited or moderate space, which is the same reason they do not own a rack of fixed dumbbells to drop across. The feature owners named most often as the deciding factor was the weight change itself. Our guide to weight settings covers why the number of steps matters as much as the speed.

The verdict

If drop sets and supersets are part of how you train, buy on mechanism first. One hand, by feel, positive lock. That rules out two-dial and screw-lock systems and pushes pin systems down the list. Among the one-hand designs, the BrainGain SmartBells 40 kg is the fastest we have timed and the cheapest per kilogram in Europe, which makes it the best adjustable dumbbell for drop sets in 2026. If your drop sets are mostly pressing, the SmartBells Pro 32.5 kg with its 1.5 kg steps is the better tool and still a one-hand change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best adjustable dumbbells for drop sets?

The BrainGain SmartBells 40 kg (€449). The one-hand dial changes weight in about a second by feel, with a positive lock at each of the 17 settings from 5 to 40 kg, so you can drop weight without putting the dumbbell down or looking away. For pressing drop sets the SmartBells Pro 32.5 kg with 1.5 kg steps is the finer tool.

How fast do adjustable dumbbells change weight?

It depends on the mechanism. In BrainGain's 90-day stopwatch test the SmartBells dial took about a second and the SmartBells Pro twist about four seconds, the NÜOBELL twist was comparable to the Pro, and the Bowflex 552 two-dial system was the slowest. Pin systems like PowerBlock need two hands and a look; screw-lock systems take longest.

Can you do drop sets with Bowflex adjustable dumbbells?

You can, but it is slow. The SelectTech 552 and 1090i use two dials, so the dumbbell goes back in its tray and both hands leave the handle for most changes. That pause is long enough for the muscle to start recovering, which defeats the point of a drop set.

What is the difference between a drop set and a superset?

A drop set continues one exercise past failure at progressively lower weights with no rest, so it needs a very fast weight change. A superset pairs two exercises back to back, usually at fixed weights, so it needs two ready dumbbells or one fast change between movements. Both favour one-hand selector mechanisms.

Is a fast weight change safe on adjustable dumbbells?

Only if the mechanism locks positively. BrainGain tested lateral plate play under load and a 30 cm loaded drop across the SmartBells, NÜOBELL and Bowflex 552; the SmartBells showed minimal play and no plate movement on the drop. Always confirm the dial has clicked into its detent before lifting.
