I ranked them on the things that decide it over years of use: how heavy they go, how finely they adjust, how well they are built, and whether anyone independent has checked the claims.

NÜOBELL S 240

The best-known premium name, and a genuinely nice set, but the maths do not favour it here. Bowflex SelectTech 1090

The 1090 is the heavy Bowflex, reaching around 41 kg per hand, but it is caught in the same problem as its lighter sibling. In June 2025, Johnson Health Tech recalled roughly 3.8 million Bowflex 552 and 1090 dumbbells after the plates could dislodge from the handle during use. It adjusts in coarser 2.3 kg steps with a two-dial system that is slower to change. A capable set on paper, but the recall makes it hard to recommend over a verified alternative. PowerBlock Pro EXP

PowerBlock's block design is the most compact way to store this much weight, and the pin selector is fast and durable. The catch is the shape and the expansion path: a square block does not handle like a round dumbbell, and reaching the top weight means buying add-on kits that push the real cost up. A strong pick if storage is your single biggest constraint, less so if you want a dumbbell that feels like a dumbbell and adjusts in fine steps.

What Matters Most Under €1000

At this budget every set is capable, so the decision comes down to three things: how high the usable weight goes, how small the jumps between settings are, and whether the build and claims are verified. The SmartBells Pro wins all three, with the highest ceiling, the finest 1.5 kg steps, and the only independent test in the group. What Buyers Actually Told Us

We surveyed 73 BrainGain owners across the EU about how they train. This is the serious end of the market: 86% are intermediate or advanced lifters and 73% train three or more times a week, exactly the people who use the full weight range and need fine steps at the top. 70% train in limited or moderate space, so a single pair that reaches 41.5 kg without a rack of plates matters, and the features they praised most were the small 1.5 kg increments, the space saved, and the all-metal build.
